The much-anticipated 'Yahoo Year in Review 2023' reveals the top online searches and trends that shaped the internet landscape in Singapore throughout 2023. The rankings were derived from anonymised interest patterns based on what was searched by Yahoo users.
According to Yahoo, a key focus of the study was tech trends, where Apple's latest tech gadgets, the new iPhone model, iPhone 15, and its all-time favourite iPad, dominated the Top Tech Gadgets list. Rivaling Apple was Nintendo's well-loved gaming console, Nintendo Switch, and Samsung's S23 Ultra Smartphone, as well as Amazon's Kindle. On the brand front, Google continued its rule as the most searched tech brand, while Xiaomi and Lenovo gained presence with successful product launches.
The list also provided insights into sports searches. The data saw Manchester United overtake Liverpool as the most searched football club, and incorporated Singapore's rising sports talent, Loh Kean Yew and Shanti Pereira, among top-ranked international athletes. In the celebrity category, Lawrence Wong and Rebecca Lim were central, being the most searched male and female celebrities respectively.
The review unveiled the most searched stocks, dominated by Singapore Airlines, OCBC Bank and DBS Group Holdings. Elon Musk and Ng Kok Song topped the list of most searched business leaders. In the realm of beauty brands, French luxury fashion house, Dior, outshined Sephora for the top spot.
As the year draws to a close, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong emerged as the top newsmaker, most notable for his political succession plan. Finally, the list revealed the nation's love for local staycations and romantic cruises, where Genting Dream Cruise took the lead amid a variety of local hotels. Most searched online travel portals included Trip.com and Agoda. In essence, the review antics a comprehensive overview of the year's search behaviour, unveiling the interests and curiosity of internet dwellers in Singapore within the year 2023.
"Yahoo's Year in Review 2023 provides an exciting exploration of the top searches that captivated the curiosity of Singapore's online community," Yahoo says.
"Both malware data and search trends from the last year were analysed to compile this fascinating review," it says.
"The revelation reinforces the technological advances and changing trends that permeate the societal fabric in Singapore, the most popular of which are mirrored in the extensive top search lists revealed."

Well-known local celebrities such as Lawrence Wong, Desmond Tan, and Fann Wong have once again proved their popularity among Singaporeans by securing spots in the top ten rankings of the most searched local celebrities for the fifth consecutive year. Singaporean actor Lawrence Wong (1st) maintains his dominance as the most searched local male celebrity for the third consecutive year. Building on his success in the widely-acclaimed Chinese period drama Story of Yanxi Palace (2018), Lawrence continues to captivate the Singaporean audience with his versatile performances in Singapore's comedy-drama film Reunion Dinner (2022) and modern rom-com drama Stand or Fall (2023).
