Amazon Web Services has introduced four new AWS Elemental features for live video streaming, focused on advertising, personalisation, metadata and multiview streaming.

The additions span AWS Elemental MediaTailor, MediaPackage and Elemental Inference, and target broadcasters and streaming platforms handling live video at scale.

One of the new tools, MediaTailor Yield Optimization, is designed to automatically fill unused advertising inventory with demand from Amazon Publisher Services. This allows streaming publishers to turn unfilled breaks, slate video and dead air into paid impressions without adding separate infrastructure.

The feature is available at launch to APS streaming TV publishers. Publishers can set their own price floors and category restrictions, while the system is intended to avoid placing competing brands in the same break.

Another addition, MediaTailor Low-Latency Ad Insertion, extends personalised server-side advertising to low-latency streams using Apple's HLS interstitials. It addresses a long-running trade-off in live streaming, where media groups have often had to choose between keeping streams close to real time and inserting targeted adverts.

The tool is aimed at live events where timing matters, such as sports and breaking news, as viewers increasingly compare streams with updates on social media.

Multiview streaming

A third feature, MediaPackage Dynamic Multiview, lets viewers choose their own multi-camera or multi-feed layout from a single set of encoded sources. Layouts are assembled on demand and delivered over standard HLS or DASH streams to consumer devices, without creating a separate encoded stream for each viewing option.

The approach is intended to reduce the cost of offering multiple live views, which has often required either device-specific software, formats with limited device support, or extensive pre-encoding of every layout combination.

AWS says the service reaches more than 95% of consumer devices with a single digital rights management key and does not require a dedicated software development kit for each device type.

"AWS Elemental MediaPackage Multiview lets us deliver multiple synchronized camera angles within a single stream, putting our subscribers in control of how they experience live sports. The server-side composition approach scales this premium experience to over 100 million viewers without multiplying origin complexity or CDN costs, giving us a true differentiator in India's competitive OTT landscape," said Akash Saxena, CTO, JioHotstar.

AWS says the service can provide up to 97% cost savings compared with systems that generate a separate video stream for every layout combination. Large operators using existing server-side compositing systems can spend between USD $2 million and USD $12 million a year on infrastructure.

Metadata layer

The fourth addition, Elemental Inference Contextual Metadata, extracts AI-generated metadata from live video in real time. The system identifies objects, actions, brands, on-screen text and sentiment while video is being encoded.

The metadata is made available through an application programming interface and aligned with the Interactive Advertising Bureau content taxonomy and Global Alliance for Responsible Media brand suitability categories.

This can be used for automated highlight clipping, content discovery, contextual advertising decisions and moderation. The feature is intended to reduce reliance on manual tagging or custom machine-learning systems for live broadcasts.

Ad pressure

The launch reflects pressure on streaming groups to extract more revenue from live programming while keeping delivery close to broadcast speed. Broadcasters have also been trying to offer more flexible viewing options, especially for sports, without taking on the cost of building separate technology stacks for every use case.

The four additions run within AWS's existing Elemental services rather than as separate products. Keeping metadata, viewing options and ad insertion inside the same workflow could simplify live operations for media companies.

One AWS customer example focused on low-latency monetisation during major sports coverage.

"Our team set out to monetize low-latency streaming without giving up the latency itself, which had not been done on our platform before. Through DSPORTS's coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, we held six seconds glass-to-glass with ads running across every match, built on AWS Elemental MediaTailor and Amazon CloudFront," said Rodrigues da Silva.
