General Assembly opens AI Academy in Singapore for workforce upskilling

Wed, 16th Apr 2025

General Assembly has launched its AI Academy in Singapore, offering flexible and customisable AI training programmes aimed at upskilling workforces across all roles and sectors.

The introduction of the AI Academy comes as Singapore sets a national focus on AI adoption and workforce upskilling, following several initiatives unveiled under Budget 2025. These efforts are in line with international trends, where, according to General Assembly research, 89% of tech hiring managers expect their companies to increase investments in AI over the next year. Despite these plans, a shortage of suitably qualified staff remains a challenge. In Singapore, only 4.2% of small and medium-sized enterprises have taken up AI, according to a 2023 Infocomm Media Development Authority report.

The AI Academy is structured to allow businesses to assemble learning modules, select the depth of instruction, and tailor context to their unique requirements. It targets broad business functions, including HR, marketing, sales, and product management, as well as technical and operational teams. Courses, which range from half-day workshops to three-day sessions, are designed to offer expert-led, practical instruction with real-world applications that aim to increase workforce productivity and support organisational outcomes.

Participants can choose from three levels of AI learning: "AI-Enabled", "AI-Augmented", and "AI-Superpowered". These levels provide progressive depth, supporting employees in advancing their understanding and use of AI within their respective roles. The courses are structured to serve decision-makers, technical and data teams, and business and operational teams, with both technical and non-technical tracks available. Each training module is conducted by industry professionals with at least ten years' experience, and organisations can customise further, for instance by opting for post-training guidance or delivery in specific languages.

Daniele Grassi, Chief Executive Officer of General Assembly, said, "Companies are rushing to adopt AI but failing to bring their workforces along. The growing disconnect between technology investments and human capabilities is a significant barrier to achieving ROI from AI. Businesses need to start building AI skills across the workforce, now."

The AI Academy provides several courses tailored to different job functions. "AI for Decision-Makers" is a non-technical track designed for board directors, executives, and team leaders, focusing on how AI insights can support strategic decisions, operational efficiency, and responsible AI implementation. "AI for Tech & Data Teams" is a technical pathway aimed at data scientists, engineers, and related positions, with practical skills emphasised for implementing and maintaining AI tools. For business and operational teams, another non-technical track helps HR professionals, marketers, product managers, and others use AI to enhance sales and daily operations.

"At this juncture, AI has evolved from being 'just another tech skill' to be learnt to being integrated into many of the everyday tools we use. AI will eventually be built and embedded into other tech skills that we learn from here on out, and we see the ever-growing importance of helping workforces be equipped for this evolution in their existing skillsets. As Singapore looks towards harnessing AI, continuously reskilling and upskilling the local talent pool is key to building diverse and future-proof talent pipelines," said Sima Saadat, Singapore Country Manager, General Assembly.

General Assembly's training offerings are designed for broad applicability and can be adapted to organisational requirements, supporting both immediate and long-term workforce transformation objectives. This move also aligns with government priorities to develop AI capacity in Singapore and strengthen the national talent pipeline for technology-driven sectors.
