Code and Theory appoints JJ Schmuckler as President

Wed, 22nd Apr 2026 (Yesterday)

Code and Theory has appointed JJ Schmuckler as president, adding a former WPP and Real Chemistry executive to its leadership team.

Schmuckler joins the Stagwell-owned digital transformation network after serving as group president and chief revenue officer at Real Chemistry. Earlier in his career, he spent most of his time at WPP, where he rose to global chief growth officer at VML.

He will work across strategy, technology and creative as Code and Theory looks to strengthen its position with chief marketing officers facing increasingly complex decisions around brands, data and digital systems. His remit includes sharpening the company's market positioning and deepening client relationships.

The appointment comes as agencies and consulting groups compete to offer a broader mix of services to marketing leaders, who increasingly oversee brand strategy alongside technology and data decisions. That shift has pushed firms to argue for more integrated operating models rather than campaign-by-campaign work.

Code and Theory sees rising demand for partners that can combine creative work with engineering and platform delivery. The group has spent 25 years positioning itself at the intersection of creativity and technology, and says Schmuckler's arrival reflects that focus.

Part of Stagwell, the network includes Code and Theory, Kettle, Instrument, Left Field Labs, Truelogic, Create. Group and Current. Its client roster includes Amazon, JPMorganChase, Microsoft, NBC, NFL and Yeti.

In the new role, Schmuckler is expected to help clients connect platform decisions, data use, technology choices and creative development within a single framework. His experience in large organisations was a factor in the hire, particularly his record of identifying core business problems before expanding the scope of work.

The appointment also underscores continued competition for senior executives with experience across major holding companies and specialist groups. Talent spanning creative agencies, revenue leadership and consulting-style client work has become more sought after as agency networks reshape their offerings around broader business transformation mandates.

Schmuckler described the role as helping senior executives manage overlapping demands across corporate functions.

"The C-suite are being asked to play five-dimensional chess, making brand decisions, technology decisions, data decisions and transformation bets all at once. What excites me about Code and Theory is that the capabilities are intentionally unified and have been developed with focus and precision, not as the outgrowth of mergers and consolidations. Clients may come in through different doors, but the end story is the same: building an ecosystem that connects strategy, creativity and engineering in a way that actually makes sense together," said JJ Schmuckler, President of Code and Theory.

Michael Treff, Chief Executive Officer of Code and Theory, described the hire as part of the company's effort to strengthen senior client relationships.

"JJ is one of the most trusted leaders in the industry, a true confidant to senior marketers. He understands the ever-changing landscape and knows how to build the kind of partner relationship that turns complexity into momentum. We're thrilled to have him leading with us," said Treff.
