Anthropic launches Claude for Word with tracked edits
Anthropic has launched Claude for Word, a beta add-in for Claude Team and Enterprise plans.
The product brings Claude directly into Microsoft Word instead of a separate window. Users can select text, request changes, and review the results as tracked changes using Word's existing review tools.
Comment handling
The add-in is designed to work with comments already left in a document. It reads each comment, edits the anchored text as a tracked change, and replies in the comment thread with details of what it changed.
Template drafting
It can also draft within existing templates. Users can open a template and describe what they need, and Claude will write using the document's existing heading and bullet styles while adding citations to uploaded source documents.
Document checks
The software also checks documents for consistency issues across the full file. It can flag inconsistent defined terms, broken cross-references, and numbering errors, with any fixes shown as tracked changes for review.
Users can also rewrite selected passages without altering the rest of a file. A paragraph can be tightened, shifted in tone, or edited to remove passive voice while keeping styles and numbering intact.
Teams can also save repeatable Word workflows as what Anthropic calls skills. These can be used for recurring tasks such as contract review, status memos, or research briefs, giving teams a standard process for similar work.
Cross-app context
The launch also extends Claude's reach across Microsoft's core office applications. Users can carry context across its Word, PowerPoint, and Excel add-ins within one conversation.
Security and access
Users can sign in with a Claude account or connect through an existing cloud provider. The tool also works within an organisation's existing compliance framework.
Anthropic cautioned that Claude can make mistakes and said users should review tracked changes before accepting them, especially in client-facing documents.
The add-in supports .docx and .docm files. Users with older formats such as .doc or .rtf must first save them as .docx before the add-in will appear.
Market direction
The release reflects a broader push by artificial intelligence companies to embed writing and editing tools inside established workplace software rather than requiring users to move between separate applications. In Word, Anthropic is focusing on features tied to document review, revision control, and formatting preservation, which are central to legal, corporate, and research workflows.
Claude inherits heading styles, numbering schemes, bullet formatting, and defined terms from the existing document, helping edits stay within the file's structure.
